Synthetic 13-amino-acid peptide modeled on the body's natural pigmentation hormone, used in research on melanocortin signaling.

Melanotan-1 is a synthetic version of α-MSH, the natural hormone that controls pigment-making cells in skin. Two amino-acid swaps make this lab version much more stable than the natural hormone. It's selective for the MC1R receptor — the one that drives melanin (pigment) production — compared to other melanocortin receptors.
How it's been studied: Research has looked at exactly how Melanotan-1 binds the four melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R) with different strengths, and at the downstream signaling that turns on tyrosinase — the enzyme that makes melanin.

Handling notes: The amino-acid swaps make it last much longer in lab conditions than natural α-MSH. Standard cold storage.
